The Beginning of a Career

Jacobs' first truly original undertaking was the collection of original knitted sweaters “The Sketchbook label, Reuben Thomas, Inc”, which received a very warm response from the audience. 

That same year, in 1984, together with Robert Duffy they created the company Jacobs Duffy Designs Inc., and in 1996 his first women's collection appeared, receiving an award from the Council of Fasion Designers of America. Jacobs and Duffy make it into the pages of glossy fashion magazines; buyers and major brands take an interest in them.

In 1989, Marc and Robert are invited to Perry Ellis. Robert is offered the position of president, and Marc becomes creative director. At that time, he was fascinated by surfers and the country spirit. But three years later, inspired by the style of Nirvana, the partners release a grunge collection that captured the attention of the public and journalists. Perry Ellis executives decide that such an approach is too extravagant for them and dismiss Jacobs. 

Despite the dismissal, Marc once again received the “Designer of the Year” award from the Council of Fasion Designers of America. He works on his own brand, releases the legendary “Falling Stars” collection, and soon makes his debut in menswear. 

In 1996, Marc was hired as lead creative director of Louis Vuitton, with the company agreeing to his condition of support from the LVMH holding for the development of the Marc Jacobs brand.

The first Marc Jacobs store and new look accessories

With the money received from Bernard Arnault, Jacobs opens the Marc Jacobs boutique on Mercer Street and organizes several shows. At the same time, Marc is working on the Louis Vuitton ready-to-wear collection, opposite in spirit to his signature creations, which reveal entirely different facets of his design talent. 

Marc Jacobs items are, in a way, a rebellion against fashion bon ton. Street styles, music bands and tracks, cultural layers, and close attention to the colors used make every brand item special. 

By the middle of the 2000s, the brand already owned 60 boutiques around the world. The Jacobs name graces six exclusive perfumes, clutches. And Marc Jacobs bags and backpacks gather no fewer fans than Louis Vuitton creations. 

However, Jacobs is not limited to either clothing or perfumes. At one time, school supplies, surfboards, gadget cases, men's loafers, and watches were produced under his brand. 

Since 2013, the main focus of Jacobs, who left Louis Vuitton, has been concentrated on his “namesake” brand, which makes his creations even more interesting.
