At its peak, ToysRus (Toys R Us, "toys are us") owned 800 stores in the US and just as many in Britain, Canada, and other countries. The store sold more than $20 billion worth of toys annually. It had millions of fans. But it couldn't last forever.

In September 2017, the toy store ToysRus had to declare bankruptcy. This surprised many, given its popularity. But it turned out the company had been operating at a loss since 2013. The problem was very low prices and constant competition with giants like Amazon and Walmart, which were developing their own online offerings.
The costs of offline stores were too high, the ToysRus online store could not compete with Amazon, and so the company had to announce its capitulation. It had taken on debt to keep toy prices as low as possible, but it could not survive until November-December, the main sales season in America, which management had high hopes for.
The bankruptcy of the ToysRus store became almost a national tragedy for America. People cried, shared their stories, talked about what toys from the company they had as children, and brought flowers to the stores. Everyone liked the cozier, homier atmosphere that this brand created.
For two long years, nothing was heard from ToysRus. The company dealt with its debts, sold all its locations, and tried to figure out what to do next.
And finally, in October 2019, a new official ToysRus online store launched. Completely redesigned, yet retaining elements of the original design. It is still just a small part of what it used to be, but many in America are happy with even that — as a symbol of the brand's revival. The ToysRus website currently mainly offers reviews, videos, and toy ratings. It also provides information about the best toys in each category.
The new ToysRus is still hard to call an online store. The company does not yet have its own facilities. The site only redirects buyers to Target offers. There they can complete their purchase.
Of course, this is still the first step, but those who are used to the ToysRus interface can already choose and buy toys in a more convenient environment for themselves. And most importantly — this time the company managed to make it just in time for the start of the Christmas and New Year season!
In December 2019, the company officially announced its return: it opened a new (first) store. In New Jersey — where it all began seventy years ago. Its area is only 500 square meters, ten times smaller than the stores closed in 2017, and this space also includes entertainment for children, like a slide and a ball pit.
The ToysRus online store in its full former capacity should be revived in 2020. Soon the first proprietary online offers should appear there as well. The company plans to release toys under its own Tru Kids brand and sell them on the official ToysRus website. The brand's history continues. It is gradually rising from oblivion.
And we can hardly wait for the time when we can once again deliver the most interesting toys from America from ToysRus to Russian kids :)
