A few tips to help you find the right American size
Measure your waist, hips, and chest
When buying American clothing, you need to know three measurements: chest circumference, waist circumference, and hip circumference. Measure yourself and your family members to make sure you're buying the right size. For children's clothing, knowing the child's height and weight is enough.
Measure height — not just for kids, but for adults too
This is especially important if your height is non-standard.

From small to large
American adult clothing sizes are most often represented by even numbers in ascending order. 4 USA is small, while 14 is large.

The "minus one" rule
Clothing with letter size labels (S, M, L) tends to run one size larger than usual. If you normally buy medium (M) T-shirts, go with S when shopping at an American store.
Runs small or oversized
Check the size charts and customer reviews on the store's website to see how an item fits and whether it runs small. With this information, you can decide whether to size up or down. Key phrases to look for: Fit Small, Fit Normal, and Fit Oversize.
Check what you already have
You probably already own clothing at home that has American sizes on the labels. Check the tags on your clothes and shoes — chances are you'll find out which American size matches your usual size or the size of your family members.

Use the size charts provided on online store websites, as different manufacturers may have slight variations from standard sizes. There are 2.54 cm in 1 inch. You can multiply measurements in inches by 2.54 each time, or find your measurements in inches by multiplying them by 0.39.
