History of Urban Outfitters
The company was founded in 1970, almost 50 years ago, in Philadelphia, in the state of Pennsylvania (the same place where we have our warehouse!). He was a student in the business class at the University of Pennsylvania, and this was his graduation project: to propose an idea and create a small company designed to occupy a niche that, in his opinion, remained free. Richard came up with the idea of making a company producing clothing that is convenient to wear around the city. This is also where the name came from: "Urban" – "City", "Outfit" – "Attire".
Gradually, from a single boutique, the company under Hayne’s management expanded to several stores in Pennsylvania and then entered New York and other U.S. states. In addition to convenient clothing for girls and guys that lets you walk around the city in style, Urban Outfitters began to offer footwear, accessories, and even home goods.
Today the company has more than 250 stores worldwide, including in Canada, Belgium, France, Ireland, and Germany. It has 17,000 employees, and the official Urban Outfitters website has become one of the most popular places for people aged 15 to 35 to buy their clothes. Richard Hayne, for whom it all started with a simple student project, is now on the list of the top 400 wealthiest people in the USA.
